A candy apple is an item of confectionery, featured in the Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso series.

Background & General Information[]

  • Candy apples are whole apples covered in a sugar candy coating, with a stick inserted as a handle.
  • First created in 1908 in New Jersey, USA by William W. Kolb
  • Cany apples (alongside grapes, tangerines and strawberries) are commonly available at Japanese festivals.
  • Occasionally called toffee apples.

Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso[]

The candied apple first appears in Chapter 21 (Volume 6) of the same name. After practising for the Gala Concert with Kaori, Kousei Arima is taken to a festival by Hiroko Seto with Koharu Seto. Kousei complains to Hiroko that he has to practise, but Hiroko tells him to relax. Kousei respects Hiroko as she is an accomplished pianist and goes along with her.

Scene from candied apple

Koharu runs off (with some money) after seeing cotton candy. Kousei talks to Hiroko about his mother and whether she resented him for a moment before Koharu comes back with a candy apple. Koharu gives one to Kousei and he just stares at it for a moment. This is because his mom never let him have one, but Koharu takes it as a sign that he does not like it.

Another bit of candied apple

Hiroko follows up from the earlier discussion that rebelling against your parents is a sign of growth as a human being. Kousei decides to eat the apple after realizing its okay to play even without Saki. He takes a bite out of the apple and is suprised that it really is just an apple. Koharu misunderstands this again for him not liking it.

After one final reflection, Kousei says that this candy apple reminds him of his childhood.

Symbolism[]

Parent's Influence[]

Kousei eating an apple that his mother never let him eat before symbolises him becoming a different person than he was before. Moving away from Saki Arima's influence marks Kousei's newfound independence. It being handed to him by Koharu could possibly even mean that the new people around him helped him achieve this.

Just An Apple[]

Kousei biting into the candy apple to find that its still just an apple may symbolise that underneath all the glamour of performing, he's still just a kid. Its true meaning is still not fully understood.

Quotes[]

Kousei: Wow. Its actually an apple.

Hiroko: Of course it is. Its a candied apple.

Kousei: The candied apple is mildly sweet. And for some reason... even though I've never eaten one before... It reminds me of my childhood.

Etymology[]

The candy (or candied) apple is called this due to its very literal meaning of an apple that is candied.
