Episode 13: Love's Sorrow

"Love's Sorrow" (愛の悲しみ Ai no Kanashimi?) is the thirteenth episode of the Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso anime adaptation. It first aired in Japan on January 15, 2015.

Synopsis[]

It’s the day of the gala concert, and it’s time for them to go on, but as Kaori is a no-show, Kousei takes the stage alone. The venue is abuzz over the strange situation of the accompanist, Kousei, showing up onstage by himself. And so Kousei starts playing the song his late mother loved, Kreisler’s Love’s Sorrow.

Plot[]

In a flashback, a young Kousei stirs awake underneath a piano. Saki plays “Love’s Sorrow” on the piano, until Hiroko Seto shows up at the door, and begs to stay over for a while. Hiroko, furious at her husband with whom she had had a fight with, vents out her anger through a song (“Idiot Husband”) on piano. Kousei asks her whether she had another fight with her husband, and she replies that “This is no fight. This is war!” To her surprise, Kousei replicates her song to the correct pitch. This prompts her to tell Saki to turn Kousei into a pianist. Hiroko remarks that Kousei is a genius.

In the concert hall, Kousei walks on stage by himself. With Kaori a “no-show”, the audience is baffled by the fact that an accompanist is playing without the violinist. Angered at Miike for criticizing Kaori, Kousei plays with evident anger. Shortly after, he remembers what his mother said about playing the piano - “Play it more gently. Like you’re caressing a baby’s head.” His playing style drastically changes, which is noticed by the audience. Hiroko remembers the pain Saki and Kousei went through for his music career. She blames herself for putting Kousei through this, because she was the one who told Saki to turn Kousei into a pianist.

Trivia[]

  • The musical piece "Liebesleid" (Love's Sorrow) is the second of a three short pieces set for violin+piano composed by Austrian-American violinist Fritz Kreisler. Liebesleid was later arranged for a piano solo version by russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff.
    • So, Kosei and Kaori planned to play Kreisler's version of Liebesleid (for violin and piano).
    • But when Kaori failed to attend the gala, Kosei played Rachmaninoff's version of Liebesleid (for piano solo).
